10:00 - 11:30 Session 1: Vocabulary and Grammar: bridging the gap.
Recent language descriptions pose a challenge to the traditional Words+Grammar model and suggest that an important part of language acquisition is the ability to comprehend and produce lexicon-grammatical phrases as holistic units or chunks. However, course books and other language teaching materials still maintain the dichotomy devoting separate sections to grammar and vocabulary. We will examine the teaching of grammar structures ''lexically'' and discover simple techniques for teaching vocabulary more ''grammatically''.

11:45 - 13:15 Session 2: From grammatical mistakes to lexical opportunities
When marking L2 students' writing teachers are naturally drawn to mistakes in grammar. However, very often a grammar mistake masks a gap in learners' vocabulary knowledge. We will explore how error correction can be given a more lexical focus and how a more integrated approach to reading and vocabulary can stimulate better lexical production in writing.

14:30 - 15:30 Session 3: Recording, revising and recycling lexis
While most teachers understand the importance of teaching vocabulary in chunks, few actually know how to go about it. The purpose of this practical workshop is to provide fresh ideas on how to revise and recycle collocations your learners come across. Be prepared for a wide variety of activities suitable for different levels, ages and learning styles. No time to plan your lesson? There will be some "last minute" solutions which require a bit of thinking
on your feet. And do not forget to bring your scissors - you might have to do some cutting!

16:00 - 17:30 Session 4: Revising texts (for maximum linguistic benefit)
10:00 - 11:30 Session 1: Online lexical tools (lab)
In this workshop we will look at a number of linguistic tools available on the web which can help teachers prepare for effective vocabulary teaching. Some of these tools can also be used by learners to build their vocabulary and go beyond users to become researchers of the language.
11:30 - 11:45 Coffee-break, socialising and networking
11:45 - 13:15 Session 2: Quizlet - more than just flashcards (lab)
Quizlet is an online tool and mobile app for creating flashcards. The standard format for vocabulary flashcards is a word or item on one side and L1 translation, definition or picture on the other. Studying vocabulary with flashcards aids memorization and recall but unfortunately doesn't give learners much information about how new words should be used. We will look at simple strategies you can use and ''tweaks'' you can add to Quizlet flashcards to make them more effective and usage-oriented.
